Catherine Opie’s Self Portrait (Cutting) was taken in 1993. The image is of the artist’s back in front of a green background. Carved into her back is a domestic scene, two women holding hands with a house in the background, a cloud with the sun peaking out from behind it and two birds flying in the distance. The blood has just begun to pool at the surface, some has already started running down her back.
